

What is Bauxite?
Bauxite is known primarily for being the primary source of aluminium. Virtually all aluminium ever produced has been sourced from bauxite. That said many of the world’s largest aluminium consumers have little to no bauxite deposits and must import it from countries such as China.
Surprisingly bauxite is not a mineral. It is, in fact, a type of residually-enriched rock composed mostly of Al hydroxides, kaolinite, Fe-oxy-hydroxides and more that result from lateritic weathering of aluminosilicate. This process typically occurs in humid, tropical and subtropical climates. Bauxite is vital for aluminium production. Without it, aluminium production on a commercial scale would not be possible.
